HOPE Scholarship: Georgia speaks out to save it

In the first 24 hours of our petition drive to save the HOPE Scholarship, more than 660 people have pledged support.

Georgia residents realize that the HOPE Scholarship is going broke. And they also know that Gov. Nathan Deal has vowed to ignore the failing program.

At Better Georgia, we’re excited to hear your voices, from across the state, in support of this important economic development program.

So instead of saying any more about what we think, we’ll share comments from you. (And if you haven’t signed the petition already, please take a moment to do so now: Save Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship).

“My daughter a Senior at Kennesaw State now. She would not have gotten to go to college if not for HOPE. My son is a Senior in High School now. He is depending on HOPE for college.” Rebecca Ownbey, Ringgold

“The HOPE Scholarship is the only opportunity many students have. As a college professor, I know that almost every student I have is working one or more jobs and trying to take courses. They are in great need, and their families are suffering in the bad economy. Too many have to drop out or interrupt their educations. Education is more needed than ever before to create a skilled workforce in Georgia as well as move Georgia forward.” Suzanne Burke, Savannah

“Our students need financial assistance with this depressed economy — I STRONGLY encourage you to keep HOPE at the top of your priority list.” Kristi Nicholson, Cartersville

“We need all the money we can in our communities for our children that are trying to better themselves.” Nicole Wooden, Lawrenceville

“HOPE is very important for every college student and helps make successful citizens!” Jennifer Fuller, Rome

“The need for education is at it’s all time highest and the lack of funding for dedicated students, like myself, will destroy our future.” Mark Howard, Macon

“As a teacher and believer that our children are our future, I strongly encourage you keep saving the HOPE scholarship program at the top of your priority list. We need educated students in order to compete nationally and internationally. Originally from the north, Georgia has struggled on the education totem pole — keep us moving forward by showing you are willing to invest in our future…our youth!! THANKS!” Kristi, Cartersville

“Kill education and you kill our future!” Terry Gough, White

“Students are the future of our state and our country. It is imperative that our state legislature support education in every way possible. The HOPE is the future for many of today’s students.” Dee Elliott, Bogart

“Hope is for our future…so save it!” Joan Woodford, Macon

“If we do not invest in our children, we will never grow as a state, county, or city. Because our children will have no reason to stay to enrich us. Therefore, other states, counties, & cities will reap our bounty. Think about it, Governor Deal!” E Marie Green, Kennesaw

“This program needs to go back to its beginning, where those who both need it and deserve it are served.” Cheryl Phipps, Dalton

“Gov. Deal, Haven’t you done enough to damage our children’s future already? You will be a blotch on our state’s history for this. You care not, though.” David Rowan, Chickamauga
